In this continuing photo project by Beckie Kern, two active members with the ISO over the years are featured. Dan Gosling (former Acting 3rd Trumpet and long time extra/substitute with the ISO), and his wife, Noelle Tretick Gosling (Concertmaster of the Muncie Symphony Orchestra and long time extra/substitute ISO violinist) detail some of the new things they have been doing, as well as focusing on ways to make new opportunities together.

“The pandemic rocked everyone's world and we were no exception.

I became an expert at teaching on Zoom and FaceTime, but often found myself in the role of counselor more than violin teacher, helping students manage their emotions, as well as my own. The feelings of confusion and loss in young people who would normally be looking towards seminal events like concerts, prom, and graduation ceremonies, was palpable, to say nothing of those who had experienced actual sickness or knew someone who had passed away. I am proud of the fact that the Muncie Symphony managed to produce not one, but two Holiday concerts in December 2020, one for small orchestra and one for the brass section. As the featured soloist, I had the opportunity to perform "Winter" from Vivaldi's Four Seasons, all on two weeks notice.

Dan had already been transitioning away from active performing prior to the pandemic to focus on his business, selling and marketing ChopSaver Lip Care (www.chopsaver.com), the product he invented. But the pandemic accelerated that metamorphosis. The silver lining was extra time spent with our son, Anthony, home early from college where he is studying film and media. Together, we all created a fabulous new website for the business which helped usher in one of the best years ever, despite the pandemic.

Dan and I were already accustomed to living and working together, but now found ourselves together almost 24/7. We realized how much we enjoyed it and we also realized, not all couples might see that as a good thing! We try to help each other with our new endeavors and I have had a chance to offer some fresh insight to Dan's business as I now have more time to pay attention to his "little side project" that has become one of our pathways out of this dark time.

Another bright spot has been a focus on health with better meal planning, daily walks, and a bonus room that now has renewed purpose as a place to stretch and work out. I have an extensive dance background and I’ve been enjoying taking online classes with some of the great ballet companies around the world.

We both understand that opportunity often comes out of chaos, and looking for the positive aspects of this strange time we are all experiencing has kept us sane and looking forward to better times ahead!”
